MEU emerged out of a small idea: to simulate the European Council by AEGEE-Osnabrück in the Summer of 2005. AEGEE is a melting point for huge scale ideas and crazy people. Quite soon the idea was expanded to the whole decision-making process, simulating the Commission, the Council and the Parliament. A few students from other AEGEE-locals joined the team. In April 2006 a new local joined the AEGEE-network and directly suggested to host the simulation: Strasbourg. Since the first edition MEU now takes place in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The whole event was just organised by six internationals and the brave team in Strasbourg. Due to funding problems the event had to be postphoned, but from 4th -10th March 2007 finally 150 students form Portugal to Azerbaijan took the blue seats and headphones. The atmosphere was vibrating and discussions took place until late in the night. The topics under debate were controversial and we tried to assign people roles and opinions as far away from their own as possible. The technical regulation of a funding instrument for the Western Balkan included the spicy question if Kosovo is to be listed among the recipient countries. We had the great luck to welcome many participants from the Balkan countries. The second proposal was not as controversial among the participants, but the directive on “recognition of non-formal education” directly touched their lives. In the final debate we could convince MEP Trautman of the need for such an European intervention. The last day was titled “get active!”. Several projects were presented and obviously people got inspired to organise MEU 2008. |
